It’s Sunbowl Week!

Yes, yes it is… its the most wonderful time of the year… ( if you’re a sports Fan in El Paso!)

It’s Sun bowl Week! a week filled with Basketball games, Meet and Greets, Fan Fiesta’s and one of the Longest running Bowl games in NCAA Division I history… The Hyundai Sun Bowl.

This year on Saturday December 26, 2015 at Noon, we have the Match Up From the Pac-12 the Washington State Cougars and from the ACC we have “The U” Miami Hurricanes.

Both teams will be making their second appearance in a Sun Bowl.  The Cougars defeated Purdue 33-27 during the 2001 Sun Bowl, a Washington State team coached by Mike Price, who later became the head coach at UTEP (2004-12) and still resides in El Paso.  The Hurricanes, meanwhile, lost to Notre Dame 33-17 in 2010 in front of a sellout Sun Bowl crowd. Now in its 54th year, the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational is the oldest collegiate holiday basketball tournament in the country. The tournament is held annually at UTEP’s Don Haskins Center. The list of top-tier college basketball programs that have played in the Sun Bowl Invitational over the past half-century includes Georgetown, Maryland, Arizona and Florida.

The 2015 edition is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 21 and Tuesday, Dec. 22. UC Irvine, Norfolk State and Sam Houston State will join UTEP on the hardwood this year.

UC Irvine took the victory over Sam Houston State with a Final score of 63-53 at the Haskins Center.

Norfolk State pulled off the upset over the Miners with a final score of 85-76.

UC-Irvine faces Norfolk State in the Championship at 7 p.m. (MT) and the consolation game is set for a 5 p.m. (MT) tip-off  between UTEP and Sam Houston State in the Don Haskins Center.
